March 2024 Update
After a year of closure due to road damage on Angeles Crest Highway caused by epic winter storms, Chilao School will resume its normal programs from April to October, 2024. There is still a detour over Upper Big Tujunga Canyon in order to reach Chilao. If you are coming to the school for the first time, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the location of Chilao Campground and the surrounding roads before you begin your road trip.

Chilao School is situated in the heart of the Angeles National Forest, in Chilao Campground, accessible from Angeles Crest Highway and two miles from Newcomb's Ranch Bar and Restaurant.
Built by La Canada Unified School District in 1963, it served as a public school from 1963 to 1981. It was decommissioned as a public school in 1982. In 2011 Redbird acquired the property and began the (ongoing) work of addressing 30 years of deferred maintenance, and creating public programs in a region still recovering from the Station Fire of 2009.
Today Chilao School hosts a diverse offering of programs, including a number of annual events and recurring workshops. Our community is a mixture of USFS firefighters and CalTrans employees, motorcyclists and automobile enthusiasts, bicyclists, campers, hikers and nature enthusiasts, land owners and residents, astronomers, and professionals in the broadcast industry. You can follow us on Facebook to get a glimpse of what's happening in the forest and at the school:

Moto Yoga takes place one Sunday a month, April through October. This basic yoga workshop welcomes everyone and focuses on strength and flexibility for the maintenance of an active lifestyle. You don't need to own a motorcycle or a bicycle to join us. We are often joined by acupuncturist and traditional herbalist Dr. David Lee. Chair massage, brunch, acupuncture follow yoga.

Gary Pickett's annual Knap-In, a flint knapping and paleo tools camp out and gathering, usually takes place the second weekend in June, however, Gary will be re-creating the schedule for 2021 based on COVID conditions and available dates at the school. This is a family friendly gathering; day visitors and weekend campers are welcome. Check Chilao School's Facebook page for event information.
Models in the Mountains Live Model Horse Show is scheduled for April 30-May 2, 2021. Friday is a retreat/art day and Saturday is a (halter only) show welcoming original finish plastic, custom and artist resin models in all scales. The number of showers will be limited to around ten for social distancing purposes.

Donate to Preserve and Support
We work, a few projects a year, at repairing, maintaining and upgrading the Chilao School property. In the meantime, we host programs and workshops that are almost always free, public and family friendly, and often unique in our approach to peer learning in a relaxed, friendly environment. All of our work is funded entirely through donations, which are tax deductible to the full extent of the law.
