2024 Track Days
Sunday, April 7 Sunday, September 29 |
|
Highway 2 Track Days are held on Horse Thief Mile at Willow Springs International Raceway in Rosamond, California. We have two track days in 2024; Sunday, April 7 and Sunday, September 29.
The cost is $150.00, which includes instruction/mentoring for C group riders at no additional charge.
What is it? A fun, chill, challenging track day on Horse Thief Mile, a twisty, curvy track at Willow Springs. Horse Thief is designed to emulate the canyon experience, with numerous turns and elevation changes. It's a lot of fun for experienced riders, and a great learning opportunity for anyone who wants to get comfortable with turning, braking, inclines and apexes.
We run 3 groups, A,B,C with C group riders having the option of getting mentoring and instruction at no additional charge. Each group rides for twenty minute sessions from 9 AM to 5 PM. You will have eight sessions on the track throughout the course of the day.
All motorcycles and all skill levels are welcome. That said, you won't get a superbike out of second gear on Horse Thief. There are just too many turns. On the other end of the spectrum, small bikes are welcome as long as they can handle the inclines, one of which is an 11% grade.
This is not a race. It's a chance for experienced riders to have a good time on a fun track, and for riders with less experience to get some, and get some support while they do.
The cost is $150.00 per person. Our goals are to have fun, and to create a safe and enjoyable learning experience for less experienced canyon riders, first time track riders, and anyone who could use some practice at turning, braking, accelerating, inclines and apexes.
There is a rider's meeting at 8 AM in the pit (parking area) and you need to be at the rider's meeting. If you come late and miss the rider's meeting we may or may not let you participate. When you reserve your spot, please indicate whether you will be in A, B or C group, either in a note with your payment, or by email to [email protected]. Please be sure your email associated with your payment is current.
Your personal gear - a one or two piece riding suit is acceptable. If you don't have full leathers, that's okay. Textile riding gear is fine, but not the open mesh summer gear that isn't actually designed to protect you from anything but large insects. Full helmets, gloves and proper footwear are mandatory. Modular helmets are fine. Motocross style helmets are fine. Motorcycle boots are best, but if you aren't sure if your footwear should be on the track, post a picture on the Facebook event page in the discussion portion, and we'll figure it out.
A word about helmets. Helmet manufacturers recommend a helmet be replaced every five years whether you wear it often or not. That is because the interior materials designed to protect your head from impact, like the tires on your motorcycle, have a short functional life. They become less able to protect you over the course of time. The materials break down. Protect your head with a current helmet that is less than five years old, not just for the track day but all the time.
You need new to very good tires. (Brand new tires can be slippery in their own way and need to be "scrubbed in" - have a little wear on them - before you push them). Your bike must not leak any fluids. You will tape up headlights and turn signals, and remove or tape mirrors (except instructors/mentors, they get to keep their mirrors). We will have a couple roles of painter's tape on hand.
As mentioned in the helmet paragraph, tires age whether or not they are being used. By the time a tire is four years old the rubber consistency has hardened. The tires no longer have the grip/traction/flexibility/sticky-ness that they were intended to function with. The date of manufacture is on every tire; if you are dusting off a bike that's been sitting for a while, check not only the condition of your tires, but their age.
C group riders - like our previous track days you'll have the option of riding your own ride, or getting mentorship/instruction/one on one attention for the same price.
Photographers are not allowed inside the track without an insurance policy that is filed with Chilao School and with Willow Springs. Drones are considered light aircraft at this time and to fly a drone over the track, you need special insurance specific to the drone that amounts to pilot's insurance. If you purchase that insurance, Chilao School needs a copy and so does Willow Springs.
For helmet or bike mounted cameras, have your set-up ready to present at tech inspection. We prefer you do not use selfie sticks.
Each track day has a corresponding event on Facebook. We will post articles, tips and information in the discussion portion of those events, as well as the guest list.
